It is one of the oldest quarters in the city.

The quarter was inhabited by those aristocratic families of Buenos Aires who were later obliged to move to the north of the city by the Yellow Fever of 1871. It was during this time that those families owning the San Telmo manors started to rent them to European immigrants. Together with Monserrat Quarter, San Telmo is known as the `South Quarter´in contrast with the `North Quarter´, San Nicolás. It is still possible to enjoy local rhythms from Buenos Aires and Uruguay such as tango along its streets.

The house is the remain of a larger residence built between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th.

Characterized by its large colonial houses and its streets,-many of which are still cobblestone-paved-, San Telmo is one of the best preserved areas of an always-changing city.

Among many of the attractions that this quarter offers, it is worth mentioning its various old chapels, -as famous San Pedro Telmo-, museums, antique shops and flea market, San Telmo Antique Fair in the main Square of the quarter, Plaza Dorrego.

Many other activities related to tango and `candombe´ are also carried out in the neighborhood, for the enjoyment of Porteños as well as those tourists visiting the area. On Saturday afternoons and Sundays during the whole day, Defensa Street becomes a pedestrian parade in which street artists, puppeteers, magicians and living statues can all be fully appreciated.
